Dr. Zhao is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Hong Kong. He received his Ph.D. from Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan.

His research and teaching focus on the issues that are important to the global economy and society: innovation, entrepreneurship, public policy and globalization. His current research sits at the interaction between public and private sectors, and he is particularly interested in understanding how mechanisms used to mitigate market imperfections have implications for business and economic activities. Dr. Zhao has been instructors at the University of Michigan and University of Hong Kong, where he teaches World Economy, International Business Environment, and Strategy. Prior to pursuing doctoral studies, he conducted research on how government economic development strategies affect foreign direct investment (FDI) in two industrial clusters of coastal China and their overall effects on the regional economy.

Dr. Zhao has led research projects funded by the Early Career Scheme Research Grant and General Research Fund from the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. His research has been recognized by several awards including the Ewing Marion Kauffman doctoral fellowship, Horace H. Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship and Robert D. and Janet E. Neary Award for academic excellence.
