Chi-Wa's early research fell into the areas of economic growth, international finance, and macroeconomic policy. Under the supervision of Robert Lucas, he wrote his doctoral thesis on the optimal design of income taxation in a human-capital-based growth context. With Assaf Razin (his closest coauthor), Chi-Wa has examined the interconnection among factor mobility, international taxation, growth, and crises. Through Assaf's connection, he has conducted joint work with Efraim Sadka, Jacob Frenkel, and Prakash Loungani on related issues. Besides, Chi-Wa has collaborated with Isaac Ehrlich on growth and inequality, and with Danyang Xie on financial crisis. His current research includes worldviews and altruistic behavior (with Masao Ogaki) and mental-health economics.
