The Institute for China and Global Development and Faculty of Business and Economics will co-organize the 2016 Conference on Foreign Direct Investment with the Regional Cooperation and Integration Division (ERCI) of the Asian Development Bank’s Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department from 2 to 3 June, 2016 in Hong Kong. This 2 day conference intends to investigate the role of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in fostering inclusive economic growth and regional integration, and to examine the factors that drive the ‘right-kind’ of FDI and make it effective in achieving development goals. Papers are now invited with the following research areas:

      I.        Impacts of FDI (classified by mode of entry, form, sector or source) on aspects of economic performance such as growth, poverty reduction, job-creation, technological spill-overs, and availability of credit, among others.

II.        The role of factors such as trade and industrial policy, free trade agreements and investment treaties, financial development, infrastructure, institutional quality as well as other country, sector and industry characteristics in driving FDI, as well as making it effective in achieving development goals.

III.        Given the importance of global and regional value chains in explaining the phenomena of ‘factory Asia’, what are the determinants and impacts of global value chains (i.e. vertical and export platform) - FDI?

IV.        The implications of the post-crisis global trade slowdown for developing Asia’s ability to link to production networks and move up global value chains (GVC) through GVC-FDI.

    V.        Policy relevant analyses on the sectorial and industrial composition of GVC-FDI, for example the increasingly important role of the services sector in the context of global and regional value chains or a comparison between natural resource extraction and other industries.

VI.        Policy relevant analyses on South-South and intra-regional FDI, and/or determinants and impacts of outward FDI from emerging Asian countries.

All theoretical, empirical and policy-oriented submissions on FDI, not necessarily confined to the illustrative topics listed above, are welcome.
